Case Agent

The Case Agent

The "True" Criminal Investigator

It takes an extraordinary and wide range of skill sets to become a successful case agent.  At the end of the day, it is the "Case Agent" that makes it happen.

Critical Thinking Skills & Self-Determination

The case agent is the lead in an investigation and this requires the ability to manage a number of different unglamorous tasks, personalities and resources.  The case agent must seamlessly debrief a confidential informant, write investigative reports, submit memos for approval, listen to jail recordings, conduct complex database checks, brief superiors, author affidavits, testify in court, conduct surveillance, coordinate evidence and marshall resources for enforcement actions.  A case agent must do all this *and* complete routine administrative tasks (i.e maintain firearms proficiency, complete legal training, monthly vehicle log).  This is often the most stressful role among special agents and few are truly up for the challenge.  The case agent shoulders the responsibility for all outcomes of an investigation and it is the culmination of his/her hard work which results in the indictment and arrest of federal suspects.

Professional Reputation

Nothing is more critical to the success of a case agent than their professional reputation.  No investigation is successful in a vacuum; a good case agent relies on a wide range of supporting cast members.  A criminal investigator critically needs prosecutors, administrative staff, other agencies, and fellow special agents for assistance.  Early in their careers, smart case agents acquire this critical "soft skill" and develop their network by being excellent team players themselves.
